What I Can Never Have
Standing on the jetty,
Sky lit with pinks and oranges,
Ocean spray drums my face,
Thoughts of our last time,
The remembered promise.
The end to it all.
Now as then I know it can never be.
His father is all duty,
Family name everything,
Opinions of others craved nuggets of gold.
His mother quiet, considered,
Speaks when spoken to, offers no more.
My hopes of an alliance,
A motherly shoulder pined for since a tiny child,
Never gifted itself to me.
So, I wait, wishing for what I know I can never have.
