On Halloween, this past Friday, I stayed home to early vote and to get some work done. My mother read about a kids' Halloween party at the local county library so we took Hannah to the party after daycare. Hannah's mom had to work late and we put her in an orange shirt with a cat on it because we didn't really have a costume.
So there we are with our pitifully lame Halloween-costumed toddler at this party with a bunch of elaborate batmans and princesses. Hannah (God bless her) didn't care. She was interested in the activities and especially liked watching other kids do things like toss beanbags or throw little fishing rods over cardboard partitions to "fish" for candy. I convinced Hannah to put a beanbag through a hole and she got a lollipop and some small hard candies as a prize. So, I took the wrapper off the grape lollipop and handled it to her. She just looked at it blankly. (This is going to need a little more explanation....I see.) I gave it a few licks to show her how "its done." She took it and tentatively licked the lollipop. Her eyes immediately widened....and the verdict was "I now pronounce this.....DELICIOUS!" Now...I HAD NO IDEA that she'd never had a lollipop before I started this exercise. I learned very quickly that the lollipop was a BIG HIT. I mean, when my mother tried to hold it momentarily to wipe the slobber off her hands and mouth, Hannah had a fit and pulled the lollipop away from her beloved Oma. She then started running all around the library with the lollipop in her hand. Of course, all I could think is that I will definitely get tortured and killed if anything happens to this child while she's running around with a lollipop in her hand. That said, I also couldn't take the darn thing away from her without causing a HUGE scene. So, I had to run around after her hovering over her in case she lost her footing or something to make sure that that stupid lollipop didn't cause any injuries. Great idea Tanja.
On the other hand, I don't think I've ever laughed that hard. It was like baby crack or something. She was feeling a little under the weather before the party but after tasting that lollipop KAZOW she was full of energy and couldn't wait to run around the library like an itty bitty crazy person. After an hour or so we had to drag her away from the party....she had many more laps of the bookshelves left in her (but I was starting to get a crick in my back from running around like a hunchback). When we got back to the house we thought about "hiding the evidence" but realized that it would probably come out anyway so we "fessed up" to the lollipop adventure to her mother. Luckily Esther was cool about it. Hannah had a great Halloween!
Attached are pictures of Hannah when she first tried the lollipop and after she decided it was delicious.
