I'm not ashamed to admit that I love the Olympics. In addition to the hours I spent watching more mainstream sports like gymnastics and swimming. I spent the other portion of my weekend watching archery, weight lifting, badminton and beach volleyball. I even saw a little basketball and some soccer.
Now...I'm not a big fan of watching tennis, basketball or even soccer during the Olympics because we can see that stuff all the time. The US basketball team is pretty annoying too because they're all highly paid professionals and they don't even live in the Olympic village. [I secretly hope that some small county's team kicks their butts but I'm fairly confident that won't happen. I know, that comment probably just put my name on some FBI watch list.] Yes...tennis is annoying too (for many of the same reasons that basketball is). I'm much more interested in seeing the "weird" sports that we don't see all the time...the truly amateur sports. Team handball, sailing, rowing, ping pong, etc. Commercial endorsements aside, swimming is the most exciting sport right now and track and field will be just as exciting when it starts. Yippee. I can't wait.
A friend told me that he doesn't "buy into" the Olympics. What? You don't think they exist or something? Like they're all done on some Hollywood backlot (similar to the moon landing)? I am proud to say that I whole-heartedly "buy into" the Olympics. I get a little misty when a US athlete wins a gold medal and he or she is standing on the podium while the national anthem plays. I scared the hell out of my cats when I screamed at the top of my lungs for the men's 4x100 meter relay team. It was SO BEAUTIFUL to see the French guys lose....so...beautiful....[I'm getting misty]..... [Of course, being the "cheese-eating surrender monkeys" that they are known to be....losing didn't have that much of an effect on them. (Imagine a French accent for the next part.) "Zut alor! We are vanquished again...pass the cheese and wine.....please give us more government handouts...."]
I have to say a little bit about Michael Phelps who is indisputably one of the best athletes ever. He is also, unfortunately, one of the more unattractive athletes ever. When I first saw him (this go-round) in a Powerbar ad or something, I couldn't help but think, "Yeesh....that kid grew up to be a really ugly guy." He has a sick body and he seems like a sweetheart but that face.....ouch..... It's sad. I think he should grow his hair out Mark Spitz style and cover those ears and a lot of that face....
That's primarily why I like to catch a soccer game now and then because 9 out of 10 of those guys (no matter what country) is pretty good looking. Now...they all can't be Beckham (who is beautiful in a godly-way) but they all have some seriously awesome legs and...let's face it...strong legs are darn sexy.
I need to comment on ladies' beach volleyball for a moment. Why do they wear those teeny tiny bikinis? I'm sure that's a question that has not occurred to most men but I guarantee that every woman who's caught that sport has wondered how those things stay on and why they are so short. The women look awesome in them, no doubt, but they don't look comfortable and they always seem to be riding up the butt area. I just don't understand..... Also, what's that black thing on Misty May's partner's shoulder? Yes...I can only remember the one with the alliteration in her name. You know...the taller blonde one with that black spider-looking thing on her shoulder? What's that about? Why is it so weird? The NBC guys (who NEVER SHUT UP) don't seem to like to discuss important things like the huge black bug on one athlete's shoulder or the fact that they're wearing dental floss. It has nothing to do with the game either because the guys wear very baggy shorts and loose tank tops.
Oh well. After Phelps wins his 8 gold medals, track and field is coming and I can't wait to see who gets kicked out for testing positive. Oh....you KNOW at least one person will....
Actually, I think Michael Phelps is a cutie! And that tape is kinesio tape -- works wonders supporting and promoting healing in many injuries. See my blog for photos, as I am currently taped for my achilles injury.
