I don't even want to start about how hellish it was to get down here in the first place. I will, instead, jump ahead to the coolest thing ever that happened to me this morning. I had an umbrella with two lounge chairs (one for my imaginary boyfriend) on the beach. A couple of lounge chairs down people started noticing that these little dark things were sort of wiggling in the sand and making a beeline to the water. Everyone started walking over and we realized that sea turtles were hatching in a nest under the ground and emerging and struggling their little way to the water. There were about 30-40 of them and they were all about an inch long with little shells and flippers (and extremely determined expressions on their faces). There were about 10 people on the beach and we all guarded them from the birds as they made their way to the water. I'm proud to say that we had a 100% success rate. I, of course, helped them along a little (there were some hills and crags that proved very difficult for their little bodies to navigate). It was the sweetest, coolest thing ever and, being a total sap, I actually shed a li ttle tear (from my ice cold lawyer heart).
Needless to say, Ernesto totally skipped Barbados and is, instead, spreading its mayhem on a communist nation (Cuba). It apparently never pays to be an atheist. It is really gorgeous here but extremely humid. Fortunately, there is a nice breeze on the beach and my room is air conditioned. It is also pretty quiet here with no big nightlife going on so I'm having a good rest.
I will write more later but right now I need to get off the computer (its free but they monitor your time pretty diligently). Just know that I'm doing alright and I'm trying very hard to relax (when I'm not saving new born sea turtles -- which was sort of stressful).
